LAND CAPABILITY ASSESSMENT FOR RURAL LANDOWNERS
PLANTING AND MANAGEMENT OPTIONS

FINALLY you Own Part of the Landscape…But Is It Meeting Your Expectations?

Many landowners have never considered management of their land with the objective of enhancing their ownership experience. New owners may find themselves asking “OK, so what now?!”

Generating answers to this question involves five fundamental tasks:

1. Appreciating the possibility of a broad range of land improvements/uses.

2. Determining what objectives the land is capable of supporting.

3. Deciding what actions make sense and drafting a plan.

4. Marshalling the necessary resources where objectives and capabilities are compatible.

5. Implementing the plan.

Management of land most often boils down to management of the vegetation and can involve the entire range of effort from no action to major work. Depending upon the soil and plant resource base, its current status, and the objectives sought, the complexity of action may range from simple to very detailed and from short term to long term. Certainly “doing nothing” is a management choice, but it rarely results in static conditions on the ground.

Most possible land uses are determined by the existing vegetation or the vegetation that you plan to have. FLCS can provide resource assessment and planning assistance to landowners who find themselves somewhere in this process. The best time to seek assistance is before you take action on the ground (to avoid problems), but we know this is not always how things work and unfortunately not every problem can be anticipated. Call us and we will work with you to consider alternatives, objective feasibility, and plan development.
